#06:
Bucket Hat Night
Red Sox vs. Blue Jays
June 24, 2024
Fenway Park | Boston, MA
Two things you can always count on in life:
Boston sports teams
supporting each other

and seeing an instant classic

These two forces collided
on June 24th,
landing this game
at #6 on my list of
Top 10 Games I attended in 2024.
Per usual the boy @jake.yasi came through
with two front-row seats.

The Celtics,
fresh off clinching Banner 18
one week earlier,
brought Larry O to Fenway
to celebrate with the fans.
We got there early—
just not early enough.
Bucket hats had disappeared
by the time we walked into the stadium.
Luckily, Jake’s got the
biggest Fenway fan club around
and the Section 10 diehards
came through with 2 extra buckets.

but the game of baseball?
Kinda dead.
The Jays led 6-2
into the bottom of the 8th,
with flat energy since
Tatum left the mound.
Until Sweet Caroline pumped oxygen into the crowd.
With the Celtics in the house,
Fenway came alive.
And then it happened.
One out nobody on,
bottom of the 8th:
a routine pop-up to third.
We had a perfect view
as it dropped—
a miscommunication between
the 3B and SS.
I looked at Jake,
he looked at me,
and we both knew:
the Sox were about to pull off something crazy.
Next batter,
David Hamilton crushes a two-run bomb.
Then?
Single.
Double.
Walk.
Single.
Tie game.
Onto the 9th we go.
Enter Jarren Duran:
queue Dirty Water,
it’s time to party.
Walk-off single.
Epic rally complete.

The bucket-hat-wearing,
Celtics-cheering,
Fenway faithful
roared like we had just ended
a 5-year Championship drought.
Let’s go Sox.
Let’s go Celts.
A cool nugget from this game:
it wasn’t my first time
witnessing a bottom-of-the-8th
comeback from 6-2.
Flashback:
May 7, 2004
Sox vs. Royals
Harry, Gabe, and I
watched Manny Ramirez cross home plate
to seal a 9th-inning walk-off
after a late 6-2 rally at Fenway.
Some things just stick with you—
and this night,
a 6-2 comeback in the 8th,
like that one in 2004,
is unforgettable.
